Distribution

Capricorn Group, southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west Pacific: East Africa and Madagascar, Taiwan, and southern Japan, including the Ryukyu Islands.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin macula (= spot) and pinna (= fin), in reference to the prominent black blotch or spot on the spinous part of the dorsal fin.
