Off Port Stephens, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-Pacific: East Africa east to the Hawaiian Islands, and off southern California, eastern Pacific. |

Dorsal fin 15-20; Anal fin 14-17; Pectoral fin ~16-18; Pelvic fin 8-9; Gill rakers 3+9. Vertebrae 42-46. Body depth 5-7 in SL; head length 6-10 in SL; . Caudal-fin streamer broken in all specimens, length of remainder subequal to SL in a fish of 29 mm. 125.1 Eutaeniophorus festivus: top: 5.5 cm SL, and ventral view of head; bottom: 3.5 cm SL, 14 cm TLwith complete caudal streamer. |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin brevis (= short), presumably in reference to the shorter body length of this species compared with that of Parataeniophorus gulosus, (= a larval Cetostoma regani) |
