Summary:
A brownish to sometimes purplish cardinalfish, with a whitish belly and lower head, a broad dark stripe through the eye,  a black leading edge on the dorsal fin, and 2-3 tiny black spots along the dorsal-fin base. Juveniles are semi-transparent with a back spot on the tail bases.

Distribution

Cartier Island, Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elssewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific: East Africa to Australia and Vanuatu, north to southern Japan. 
Inhabits coastal reefs, forming small schools on reef outcrops or among rocks and corals in shallow sheltered lagoons.
