250km NW of Port Hedland, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the northwest Atlantic and is circumglobal in southern waters.


Dorsal fin 131-140; Anal fin 104-117; Vertebrae 71-74.
Body elongate. compressed; dorsal fin originating on head above operculum.

Similar Species

Differs from other species of the genus in having a basibranchial tooth patch, the maxillary sheathed posteriodorsally, many flat spines posteriorly on the opercle, and five stiff projections on the rear margin of the preopercle.
