Summary:
A pale perch with about 12 wavy red stripes following the scale rows along the side, blackish blotches on the membranes between the dorsal-fin spines, a pinkish-red head that is white below, a dark ring around upper half of the eye, and a diffuse red spot on the caudal peduncle. The species has  three flattened spines on the operculum (the uppermost may be hidden by skin).

Distribution

East coast of Tasmania; also in New Zealand. Usually inhabits deep reefs.
