Distribution

Offshore Islands of north Western Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland (known from Lizard Island and Orpheus Island). Elsewhere the species is widespread in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits sandy-mud and rubble areas.

Features

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 13.  
Greatest body depth 5.5-6.4 in SL; first dorsal fin low, rounded; caudal fin with near truncate posterior margin, about equal to head length; pelvic fins united with well-developed frenum; longitudinal scale series 73-85; head without scales; cycloid scales covering body.

Etymology

The species is named for Ambanoro Bay, Nossi-Bé, Mozambique Channel, Madagascar, the type locality.
