Summary:
A pale soldierfish with a red head, red scale margins, red dorsal, anal and caudal fins with white leading edges and dark lobe tips, and a broad brown margin on the gill cover.

Distribution

NW of Monte Bello Islands to NE of Cape Lambert, Western Australia, and north of Goulburn Island, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west Pacific, from East Africa to New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands, and north to Japan.
Often found in silty reef areas, sheltering in caves or large crevices during the day.

Features

Dorsal fin X + I,13-15; Anal fin IV, 11-12 (4th spine longer than 3rd); Pectoral fin 14-16; Gill rakers 35-38; Lateral-line scales 27-29.
Body depth 2.3-2.5 in SL; no small scales at pectoral-fin axil; two pairs of tooth patches on lower jaw just outside of gape.
