Summary:
A dark brown to blackish blenny, sometimes with a brownish-yellow tail. The juveniles are a uniform yellow. In Australia, the Dusky Blenny has previously been known as Atrosalarias fuscus.

Distribution

Recorded in Australia from the Pelsart Group, Western Australia, to at least One Tree Island, Queensland; also Ashmore Reef & Cartier Islands in the Timor Sea, and reefs in the Coral Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical East-Indo-west-central Pacific.

Often occurs amongst branches of live and dead corals on sheltered shallow reefs, especially in lagoons.

Remarks

In Australia, this species has previously been misidentified as Atrosalarias fuscus which is restricted to the Indian Ocean and western Indonesia (Hastings & Springer, 2009).
