Summary:
A dusky rockskipper with six to seven irregular double dusky bars on sides, a dark spot on the front of the dorsal fin, and dusky spots on the dorsal and caudal fins. Females have scattered dusky spots on the body, and males have broad dark margins on the dorsal, caudal and anal fins.
Individuals are often seen leaping from one rock pool to another.

Distribution

Torres Strait islands to Masthead Island, Queensland; also at Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, Tasman Sea. Inhabits very shallow rocky shorelines, often in the intertidal zone. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-West Pacific, from southern Africa east to Palau, north to northern Taiwan, south to Fiji and Lord Howe Island; also in the southeast Atlantic around the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

Features

Dorsal fin XII-XIV, 19-24; Anal fin II, 21-25.

Colour

Dark spot distally between the first two dorsal spines. Males have about 6 dusky bands on the body; females with bands that tend to form vertical rows of dusky spots; dusky spots on dorsal and caudal fins; anal fin uniformly dusky.

Etymology

The species is named in honour of the French voyager and merchant Jean-Jacques Dussumier, who collected the holotype.
