Summary:

A brownish seabream with white spots on each scale forming rows above lateral line, 4-5 brownish-orange stripes on lower sides, a large yellowish blotch below the rear of the dorsal fin, a yellowish-orange snout and a yellowish-orange botch on the pectoral-fin base.

Distribution	Recorded in Australia from Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef, Western Australia, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to off Broughton Island, New South Wales; also at Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island, and Holmes Reef and Frederick Reefs in the Coral Sea. Found elsewhere in the tropical Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits coastal reefs, reef lagoons and outer reef slopes, sometimes forming large schools during the day.
Feeding	Carnivore - feeds at night on benthic invertebrates including crabs and gastropod molluscs, and occasionally on small fishes.
Fisheries	Fished commercially in parts of its range.
Remarks	Halstead et al. (1990) report that this species may cause ciguatera poisoning.
