Summary:
A pale brown to greyish goby with 7-9 short oblique dark blotches, bars or chevrons along the side, the bars usually broken up into off-set pairs of blotches. The species also has a dark oblique shoulder bar, a radiating or reticulate pattern of brown lines on the head, and a broad brown band crossing the branchiostegal membranes beneath the head.

Distribution |
Cossack, Western Australia, to Cape York and Mabuiag Island, Torres Strait. Elsewhere the species is known from Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. Inhabits mangrove-lined creeks and estuaries, sometimes entering the lower freshwater parts of streams. |

Dorsal fin VI + I,7; Anal fin I,7; Pectoral fin 15-17; Vertebrae 26: Longitudinal scales 29-40; TRB 9-13; Predorsal scales 13-21; Circumpeduncular scales 11-15. Predorsal scales small, reaching close up behind eyes, anterior-most scale somewhat larger than rest; scales on body mostly ctenoid; first spine of dorsal fin of adult males usually longest, filamentous (usually white and conspicuous). Caudal fin rounded. |

Etymology |
The specific name filifer is from the Latin filum (= thread or filament), and -fer, suffix (= to bear or carry), in reference to the elongate first dorsal fin of adult males. |
