Distribution	Houtman Abrolhos Islands to the Dampier Archipelago and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the Northern Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, Queensland, to the Solitary Islands, New South Wales; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-west-central Pacific from East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands (French Polynesia), north to southern Japan and south to Australia including Lord Howe Island. Inhabits coral rich areas from sub-tidal reef flats to deeper lagoons and seaward reefs, to at least 40 m.
Feeding	Feeds on crustacean ectoparasites of other fishes, and also on fish mucus.
Etymology	The specific name bicolor refers to the colour pattern of males (terminal phase), with the anteroir half of the body being bluish-black, and the rear of the body being abruptly white.
