A pale yellowish-tan chromis with a prominent dark vertical bar across the rear of the body and fins, and a dark smudge on the snout and top of the head.

Bonaparte Archipelago and Scott Reef, Western Australia, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral sea, to the Capricorn Group, southern Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific.
Individuals or small groups inhabit coral-rich areas in clear lagoon and seaward reefs, remaining close to the shelter of dense branching corals.


Dorsal fin Xii, 12-13; Anal fin II, 12-13; Pectoral fin 15-16; Lateral-line scales 12; Gill rakers 24-26.
Body depth 1.8-2.0 in SL.


The specific name retrofasciata is from the Latin retro- (= back) and fasciata (= banded), in reference to the dark bar on the rear of the body.
