Summary:
A yellowish to yellowish-tan butterflyfish with 7 greyish bands on the upper sides that break up into rows of dark spots on the lower sides, a black spot on the forehead and an orange bar through the eye.

Distribution

Ningaloo Reef to offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. 
Inhabits outer reef slopes at depths to 45 m - commonly in coral rich areas of clear lagoons and seaward reefs.

Feeding

Omnivore - feeds on filamentous algae, coral polyps and benthic invertebrates. 

Remarks

Occasionally hybridises with Dot-and-dash Butterflyfish, Chaetodon pelewensis, in the southern part of its range.

Chaetodon punctatofasciatus Cuvier, 1831, Histoire Naturelle des Poissons 7: 28 (as Chaetodon punctato-fasciatus). Type locality: unknown.
