Summary:
A silvery-white bannerfish with two diagonal black bands. The Schooling Bannerfish differs from the Longfin Bannerfish in having the second band ending at about the 'corner' of the anal fin, a shorter snout and a more rounded chest. Often seen in large schools.

Schooling Bannerfish are often seen removing parasites from Short Sunfish, Mola ramsayi, at cleaning stations in Bali, Indonesia.

Distribution

Shark Bay to the Kimberley region, Western Australia, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to at least Sydney, New South Wales, with juveniles further south; also in the Lord Howe Island region. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, temperate, Indo-west-central Pacific - from the Red Sea and East Africa to the west-central Pacific.

Adults usually aggregate well above the bottom on deep outer reef slopes, or in shallower water in cool upwelling areas. Juveniles often school around isolated patch reefs.

Dorsal fin XII-XIII, 23-25; Anal fin III, 17-19..

Feeding

Feeds on zooplankton and removes parasites from other fishes.
