Distribution	Widespread in the Indo-West Pacific. Adults inhabit coastal waters. Juveniles are found in estuaries, the lower reaches of coastal rivers and amongst mangroves.
Features	Meristic features: Dorsal fin IX, 10; Anal fin III, 7; Pectoral fin 15; Lateral line pores 41-44; usually 4 1/2 scale rows between 5th dorsal-fin spine base and lateral line; 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 scales above lateral line, 9 1/2 or 10 1/2 below. Body relatively slender, compressed. Second dorsal-fin spine elongated and filamentous; short 2nd and 3rd anal-fin spines 9.1-14% and 10-14% SL, respectively.
Colour	Body silvery, subadults and adults usually with 6-10 (rarely up to 14 as faint bands in larger specimens) indistinct dark vertical bands on body; bands not formed from oval spots.
Similar Species	Often confused with Gerres filamentosus, which has dark oval-shaped spots forming indistinct dark vertical bands on the sides.
