Summary:
A large dark grey emperor with a greyish-blue head and yellow to yellowish-orange fins. Juveniles are yellowish with a grey head and narrow whitish broken lines or stripes along the sides.

Distribution

Known from offshore reefs of WA (Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef) to the Arafura Sea northwest of Cobourg Peninsula, NT, and from the northern Great Barrier Reef to off Yepoon, QLD; also on the Norfolk Ridge north of Norfolk Island in the Australian EEZ. the species occurs elsewhere in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits deep lagoons and outer reef slopes in depths of 15-120 m.

Fished commercially in parts of its range.
