Distribution	Houtman Abrolhos Islands to the Dampier Archipelago, and Rowley Shoals Western Australia, Cartier Island, Timor Sea, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to at least Sydney, New South Wales, with juveniles south to Montague Island, New South Wales; also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean, and Elizabeth & Middleton Reefs and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits sandy and rubble areas in clear lagoons and on seaward reef slopes. Juveniles are usually seen near the bottom, whilst adults may swim well above bottom.
Features	Dorsal fin IX, 12; Anal fin III, 12. Body elongated, compressed; scales small; head naked; front of jaws with 2 pairs of canine teeth; caudal fin slightly rounded in juveniles, emarginate in adults.
Colour	Initial phase brown to olive brown with 17-19 dark brown bars, a blue and black spot on opercular membrane, a black spot on side of lips (spot larger on lower lip), caudal fin with a large whitish crescent posteriorly; body of terminal males green sometimes shading to blueish-green ventrally, with numerous bluish-red bars, often with a pale yellowish bar on body above origin of anal fin, head light purplish with green to blue-green bands radiating from eye, one forward onto snout expanding broadly and branching. Males from the Indian Ocean and Red Sea have a white band on the middle of the greenish body; the Pacific form has a pale peduncular area when in nuptial mode.
Feeding	Feeds mostly on fishes, but also consumes crustaceans.
