Distribution |
Off Newcastle, New South Wales, to the southern Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Southern Ocean often near sea mounts, ridges and rises. Adults are benthopelagic, juveniles are mesopelagic. |
Features |
Dorsal fin XLIII-XLV,61-65; Anal fin II,51-54. Body depth 11.4-15.1 times into standard length. Anus situated below last two dorsal fin spines. Head profile smooth, sagittal crest absent. Eye diameter 4.8-5.6 into head length. Fangs at front of jaws. Vomerine teeth absent, few uniserial teeth on palatine. First gill arch has spinescent gill rakers. Dorsal fin divided by deep notch. Pelvic fin absent in adults, present as small spine in juveniles. |
