Summary:
A dark brown escolar with darker fins, large pectoral fins, very large eyes, a large mouth with two or three fangs at the front of the upper jaw and strong teeth laterally, and a single lateral line following the dorsal profile and ending near the rear of the soft part of the dorsal fin.

Distribution

Off Cape Leeuwin to off North West Cape, Western Australia, and the northern Coral Sea to off Townsville, Queensland. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in subtropical waters. Adults are benthopelagic, mostly on the deep mid-continental slope, including around seamounts.

Features

Dorsal fin XII, 14-16; Anal fin II-III, 16-18; Vertebrae 30.
Body moderately elongate, compressed fish; eye large; mouth large with strong lateral teeth and 2-3 fangs at front of upper jaw. Lateral line single, running along upper sides of body to near end of dorsal fin. 
Spinous dorsal fin about twice length of soft dorsal fin; pectoral fin very large. The species is dark brown with darker fins.
