Summary:
Upper body with 8 dark V-shaped bars becoming darker at the lower part of each bar, a row of large dark brown spots along the lower side, scales along back with dark brown edges and pale centres, and two prominent oval black oval spots on the caudal-fin base, the upper spot sometimes ocellated.

Distribution

Off Exmouth, Western Australia, to off Moreton Bay, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific.

Features

Dorsal fin V-VI, 20-24; Anal fin I, 16-20; Pectoral fin i,13-i,15. 
Posterior margin of preopercle and opercle strongly serrate. Cheek scales ctenoid. Body elongate, its depth 5.7 to 6.9 SL. Palatine teeth absent; usually 7 or 8 teeth in outer row of lower jaw. Scales below lateral line 9-11; scale rows around caudal peduncle 22-23.

Colour

Upper body with 8 dark V-shaped bars becoming darker at the lower part of each bar, a row of large dark brown spots along the lower side, scales along back with dark brown edges and pale centres, caudal-fin base with two prominent black oval spots, the upper one appearing ocellated in most specimens, the lower of equal size or slightly longer, but not ocellated. 

Etymology

The specific name diplospilus is from the  Greek diplo (double), and spilos (spot), in reference to the two prominent caudal-fin spots.
