Summary:
A sandperch with a large black blotch on the caudal fin, 2-6 oblique brownish bands or dark spots on the lower cheek, whitish rectangular areas enclosing dark spots along the sides, and a series of blackish to brownish spots and ocelli on lower sides.

In Australia, the Blacktail Grubfish has been misidentified as Parapercis hexophtalma, which occurs in the Indian Ocean.

Distribution

Recorded in Australia from Murray Island to One Tree Island, Great Barrier Reef, and Osprey Reef, Coral Sea, QLD; also at Lord Howe Island, and Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, south-west Pacific (New Caledonia). Inhabits sandy areas on outer reef slopes and in reef lagoons. Blacktail Grubfish are commonly seen on sand or rubble at depths of 2-29 m.

Meristic features: Dorsal fin V, 21; Anal fin IV, 16-17; Pectoral fin 18 (usually).
