Summary:
An uncommon anglerfish relative found on soft bottoms in northern Australia. The species is very similar to the Humpback Anglerfish, Tetrabrachium ocellatum which differs in having the pectoral-fin rays divided into two distinct sections.

Distribution

Known in Australian waters from SW of Dongara, WA (29°29'S) to E of Yeppoon, QLD (22°54'S). Elsewhere found in the Aru Islands, Indonesia and the Torres Strait, Papua New Guinea.

Etymology

Dibrachichthys is from the Greek di, meaning 'two', brachion meaning 'arm' and ichthys meaning 'fish', in reference to the undivided pectoral fins. The specific name melanurus is from the Greek melanos, meaning black, and oura meaning 'tail', in reference to the black bar across the caudal-fin base.
