Distribution

Off Perth, Western Australia, to the Ashmore Reef area, Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea, Northern Territory, and the Coral Sea off north Queensland to SE of Gabo Island, Victoria. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
Individuals are occasionally seen at night in relatively shallow waters near deep drop-offs.

Features

Dorsal fin 12-14; Anal fin 18-20; Vertebrae 31-32. Anal organs 10-11.
Mature males with large 3 to 5 translucent supracaudal gland and smaller infracaudal gland; mature females have small supracaudal gland and much smaller infracaudal patches.

Species Citation

Myctophum fibulatum Gilbert & Cramer 1897, Proc. U. S. Natl Mus. 19(1114): 411, pl. 38(3). Type locality: Kaiwi Channel, Hawaiian Islands, 21°13'N, 157°43'37"W, Albatross station 3467, depth 310 fathoms.
