Distribution |
South-west of Point Cloates to north-west of Cape Leveque, Western Australia, and off Swains Reefs, Coral Sea, Queensland, to off Sydney, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species occurs in the east-Indo-west Pacific. |

Features |
Body elongate, snout pointed; eye diameter equal to or longer than snout; jaw teeth granular in narrow bands; opercular spine sharp and straight; 1-3 sharp spines on lower margin of preopercle; median basibranchial tooth patch 1; developed rakers on anterior gill arch 27-42; pectoral fins low on body; each pelvic fin with 1 ray longer than head; precaudal vertebrae 13. |

The specific name acer is from the Latin acro- (= sharp) possibly in reference to the elongate, sharply pointed and compressed head. |
