Summary:
A deep blue flyingfish with a pale underside, black pectoral fins with a broad yellowish bar, a large black patch on the dorsal fin, a black spot on the pelvic fins, a uniformly dark grey caudal fin, and small spots on the dorsal and pelvic fins.

Distribution

Off Exmouth, Western Australia, to off Burleigh Heads, Queensland. Elsewhere the species is pelagic in surface waters in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific. 

Features

Dorsal fin 12-16; Anal fin 9-11; Lateral-line scales 43-47, with no branch on thorax; Predorsal scales 22-29; Vertebrae 41-43.
Head short, shorter than distance between dorsal fin origin and origin of upper caudal fin lobe; snout blunt, mouth small. Upper jaw not protrusible; lower jaw slightly projecting; palatine teeth present.
Scales large, cycloid, deciduous.
Dorsal fin high; anal fin originating behind dorsal-fin origin; first pectoral-fin ray unbranched; pelvic fins elongate, inserted closer to hind margin of head than origin of lower caudal-fin lobe, extending beyond anal fin base; juveniles with pair of short tapering barbels bearing proximal flap-like appendage
