Distribution

Eastern Australia from the Coral Sea, Queensland, to off ST Helens, Tasmania. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-west-central Pacific.
An oceanic, mesopelagic species that undertakes daily vertical migrations from 375-850 m during the day, up to 80 m during the night to feed.

Features

Dorsal fin 14-16 (rarely 14); Anal fin 14-16 (rarely 14 or 16); Pectoral fin 10-11; Gill rakers 7-9 (rarely 7) + 1 + 14-15, total 22-25 (rarely 22). 
Photophores: AO 6 + 6 (5, rarely 7), total 12 (11, rarely 13). 

Size

Attains sexual maturity at a length of 4.8 cm.

Biology

This species is Spawning takes place in the spring and summer (Hulley and Paxton in press). In the Mediterranean, its depth range is from 500 to 1,100 m in the east Ionian Sea (Mytilineou et al. 2005). It reaches sexual maturity at a length of 4.8 cm.
