Southern Australia from off Tuggerah Lake, New South Wales, to off Perth, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is southern circumglobal near the Subtropical Convergence in all three oceans. An oceanic mesopelagic species migrating to 60-110 m at night.


Dorsal fin 13-15; Anal fin 19-22; Pectoral fin 14-16; Caudal fin 19; Gill rakers 4(5) + 14(12-15); AO photophores 5-6 + 7-8(6-9).

AOa photophore series strongly arched (Only species of Hygophum with AOa photophore series strongly arched); PO5 raised above pelvic-fin base; 2 Pol between lateral line and anal-fin base, Pol1 over or behind last AOa (VLO more than 2 photophore diameters below lateral line); 2 Prc on caudal peduncle. Males with single supracaudal luminous organ; females with 2(1-3) coalesced infracaudal luminous organs, sometimes separate.

Similar Species

Hansen's Lanternfish is the only species of Hygophum with the AOa photophore series strongly arched.


The species is named in honour of G. Hansen, who “for about 30 years has been attached to the Danish Marine investigations.” Hansen was captain of the research vessel Dana when the type was collected.
