Summary:
A pink to pinkish-orange gurnard becoming silvery-white below, with prominent small dark spots on top of head and upper body. The large pectoral fins have a yellowish-green inner surface with concentric dark-edged bluish bands and a large black basal spot enclosing smaller white spots.

Distribution

Found in deep waters of the Coral Sea, Queensland (23º) to off eastern Bass Strait, and the Great Australian Bight to about Fremantle; also at Norfolk Island, and on the Norfolk Ridge in the Tasman Sea, and off New Caledonia and New Zealand. The Painted Latchet is uncommon on the south coast.
Lives on the bottom at depths of about 120- 450 m.

Features

Dorsal fin VII–VIII + 11-12; Anal fin 12; Caudal fin 11; Pectoral fin 12 + 3; Pelvic fin I, 5; Lateral line scales 63-65.

Long spines on operculum, above pectoral fin base and on bony process alongside dorsal fin origin; scales in about 110–120 diagonal rows above lateral line, absent just behind head and anterior portion of belly; caudal fin forked; pectoral-fin tip to well past ventral fin tip.  

Colour

Generally pinkish, though mostly yellow above and white below; fins yellow to pink; prominent black spots and elongate marks dorsally on head, body and dorsal and caudal fins, extending more and more ventrally in large specimens; pectoral fins brown with about seven transverse black bands or rows of spots and broad white distal margin on outer side, inner side yellowish with green stripes or blotches and large black spot with white speckles basally.

Similar Species

In the past, this species has been confused with Pterygotrigla picta, a species that is known from off Chile in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
