Distribution |
Off Port Hedland, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-West Pacific from off southern Indonesia, southern Japan, Taiwan and the northern South China Sea and northwestern Australia. Inhabits continental and insular slope areas. |

Dorsal fin 11; Anal fin 29-33; Vertebrae 44-45; Pyloric caeca 6; photophores above anal fin 17-19. |

Feeding |
Feeds mainly on zooplankton, especially crustaceans. |

Etymology |
The species is named surugaensis for Suruga Bay in the Sea of Japan, the location of Heta, the type locality. |
