Distribution

Southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to at least Sydney, New South Wales; also in the Lord Howe Marine Park and at Norfolk Island, Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species occurs in New Caledonia.
Inhabits inshore coral and rocky reefs, often in deeper surge channels. The species is common at Lord Howe Island.
