Summary:
A yellowish scorpionfish, usually with 5 large poorly-defined dark blotches on the side, especially below the spinous and soft parts of the dorsal fin.

Distribution |
Off Newcastle, New South Wales, to Rottnest Island, Western Australia. Although relatively common, this species inhabits deeper reefs, and is rarely seen by anglers. |
Features |
Dorsal fin XIII, 7-9; Anal fin III, 5-6; Pectoral fin 18-21; Pelvic fin I, 5-6; Pored lateral-line scales 31-38; Longitudinal scale series 50-59; Scale rows between base of last dorsal spine and lateral line 6-7; Gill rakers (well-developed) 1 + 4-6 = 5-7, rudiments 3-5 + 3-8. Head and body robust, tapering toward caudal-fin base; head armed with low spines; region between eyes flat and scaled. Anterior dorsal-fin spines very long, connected only at base, 4th spine longest; pectoral fins large, hind margin rounded; underside of lower jaw with 3 large distinct pores on either side. |

Remarks |
Although there are confirmed records from Port Phillip in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Thetis Fish no longer occurs in the Bay.. |
Etymology |
The species is named thetidis after H.M.C.S. Thetis. |
