Summary:
A translucent, pale to dark green hardyhead becoming silvery below, with a broad silvery or faint pink to dark brown mid-lateral stripe, and fine dark speckles on the snout.

Distribution

Western Port, Victoria, to Cowell, South Australia, the Bass Strait islands and north-western Tasmania. 
Inhabits sheltered sandy areas and seagrass beds in shallow bays and sheltered inlets along the coast.

Features

Dorsal fin VI-VIII + I,9-13; Anal fin I, 10-15; Pectoral fin 11-14; Pelvic fin I, 5; Caudal fin 17; Gill rakers (lower limb) 15-20; Vertebrae 41-48.
Body very long, slender, with two small, widely separated dorsal fins; snout short, mouth large, slightly protrusible, jaws reaching front of eye, teeth small. 

Etymology

The specific name brevirostris is from the Latin brevis (= short) and rostrum (= snout), in reference to this species having a shorter snout compared with that of Kestratherina esox.
