Distribution

Off Port Hedland, Western Australia, to about Bowen, Queensland. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-west-central Pacific.
Forms schools in coastal and oceanic waters, sometimes entering large atoll lagoons or deep, clear bays.

Fisheries

Of minor commercial importance, and an important food source for large pelagic fishes such as tunas.
