Distribution

Cape Cuvier and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, and Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island in the Timor Sea, to Seal Rocks, New South Wales, including reefs in the Coral Sea; also the Lord Howe Province and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits shallow rocky and coral reefs in areas exposed to mild to moderate surge, including among boulders covered in filamentous algae.
