In a genetic study of epinepheline groupers, Ma & Craig (2018) concluded that this species belongs in the genus Plectropomus.

Distribution	Recorded in Australia from offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Evans Shoal, Northern Territory, and reefs in the Coral Sea, Queensland (14°–22°S); also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, west-central Pacific. Inhabits deep reefs.
Fisheries	Taken in deep water fisheries, and targeted in some areas of its distribution range. The species is considered to be an excellent food fish.
