Distribution

From off Rottnest Island, Western Australia, around the tropical north, to off the Gippsland Lakes, Victoria. Elsewhere the species in widespread in the Indo-West Pacific: Eastern Indian Ocean to the Philippines, Samoa and the Marshall Islands, south to Australia and New Caledonia.

Features

Dorsal fin 146-178; Anal fin 119-135; Pectoral fin 14.
Body depth at gill opening 15-22 in TL; dorsal fin originating above gill opening; anus positioned anterior to middle of body; jaw teeth small, villiform, in 2-3 rows anteriorly, in a single row posteriorly; intermaxillary teeth in several rows anteriorly, in a single row posteriorly.

Etymology

The species is named in honour of Captain George von Schéele, who collected holotype

Species Citation

Leptocephalus scheelei Strömman 1896, Leptocephalids in the University Zoological Museum at Uppsala: 21, pl.1 (figs.6-7). Type locality: Indonesia (as Malay Archipelago) and western Atlantic.
