Distribution |
From off Rottnest Island, Western Australia, around the tropical north, to off the Gippsland Lakes, Victoria. Elsewhere the species in widespread in the Indo-West Pacific: Eastern Indian Ocean to the Philippines, Samoa and the Marshall Islands, south to Australia and New Caledonia. |
Features |
Dorsal fin 146-178; Anal fin 119-135; Pectoral fin 14. Body depth at gill opening 15-22 in TL; dorsal fin originating above gill opening; anus positioned anterior to middle of body; jaw teeth small, villiform, in 2-3 rows anteriorly, in a single row posteriorly; intermaxillary teeth in several rows anteriorly, in a single row posteriorly. |

The species is named in honour of Captain George von Schéele, who collected holotype |
