Distribution

Off eastern to southern Tasmania; also north of Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in the Southern Hemisphere. Adults are mesopelagic over mid-slope habitats, and are reportedly common and abundant in the southern Tasman Sea.

Features

Dorsal fin 10-11; Anal fin 14-16; Pectoral fin 10; Pelvic fin 7; Gill rakers (total) 18-21; Long gill rakers 3-4 in angle of arch; Vertebrae 43-35; Pseudobranchiae present. Photophores: ORB 2, OP 3, SO 1, BR 14-16, VAV 14-15, AC 12-14, IC 51-53; OA 31-33. Preanal part of OA series festoon¬ shaped.

Biology


Etymology

The species is named in honour of Paul-Friedrich Meyer-Waarden, of the Bundesforschungsanstalt für Fischerei, on his 70th birthday, and for his contribution to the publication of Krefft’s series of papers on fishes collected during research cruises of the Walther Herwig in South America.
