A cream to pale yellowish-brown lizardfish with a reticulated pattern along the back, a series of dark blotches along the midside, a pale yellow stripe along the lower side, and a dark blotch behind the head.

Widespread around the northern Australia, from Fremantle, Western Australia, to NW of Fraser Island, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific: Sri Lanka and Indonesia (Bali and West Papua).

Synodus sageneus Waite 1905,  Rec. Aust. Mus. 6(2): 58, pl. 8(1). Type locality: "Trawled between Fremantle and Houtman's Abrolhos", Western Australia.
