Distribution |
Broome, Western Australia, to the Burnett River, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in New Guinea. Often found in turbid inshore waters. |
Features |
Dorsal fin 13-16; Anal fin 14-17; Pectoral fin 10-12. Gill-rakers first arch (7-II) + (17-24) = 25-33, second arch (2-5) + (15-19) = 18-24; Vertebrae (31-35) + (16-19) = 47-53. Maximum body depth much greater than maximum body width. Preorbital canal simple, posterior branch absent. Upper jaw wider than long; lower jaw moderate in length, slightly shorter than head length in adults, longer in juveniles. Dorsal-fin base length equal to or greater than length of anal-fin base; pelvic fins inserted far forward; caudal fin emarginate, not forked. |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin neglectissimus (= most neglected, unnoticed), in reference to the confusion of this species with Hyporhamphus neglectus, which had previously been confused with Hyporhamphus quoyi (as Hemiramphus gaimardi). |
