Summary:
A pearly greyish cardinalfish with a blackish tip on the first-dorsal fin, a faint darker marking on the caudal-fin base, and a small dark spot on the gill cover behind the middle of the eye. The Pearlycheek Cardinalfish lacks brownish bars on the body and has no small spot above the pectoral-fin axil.

Distribution

Endemic to northern Australia from the Kimberley region, Western Australia, to Yirrkala, Northern Territory. Inhabits shallow inshore reefs, including tide pools.

Features

Dorsal fin VIII + I,10-11; Anal fin II,9; Pectoral fin 16 Vertebrae 24.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin opercularis (= covering), presumably in reference to the small black patch above a pearly-white patch on the operculum ("on the operculum there is a margaritaceous patch with a black patch above it.")
