Summary:
A cryptic sand coloured goby with five small midlateral blotches, a transverse band of fine melanophores, narrower than the pupil, across the nape, and pale branchiostegal membranes in both sexes.

Distribution |
Rowley Shoals, Western Australia, Darwin, Northern Territory, to Moreton Bay, Queensland. Inhabits pools on intertidal sand flats along beaches, sandy creek mouths, and mangrove creeks. When threatened, individuals rapidly conceal themselves in the sediment. |

Dorsal fin VI + I,9-11; Anal fin I,11-13, Caudal fin, segmented rays 17, branched rays 13; Pectoral fin 14-16; Pelvic fin I, 5; Gill rakers 1-2 +1 + 7-9; Lateral scale rows 24-26; Transverse scale rows 7; Vertebrae 26. Gill rakers low rounded stubs, only first arch with rudimentary rakers (second arch with one or two). Breast with large cycloid scales, 3 in ventral midline. |

Etymology |
The specific name evanida is from the Latin evanidus: (= disappearing or vanishing), in reference to the species' ability for rapid concealment. |
