Summary:
A sandy coloured goby with five large reticulated W-shaped lateral blotches along the midline, a transverse band of fine melanophores (wider than the pupil) across the nape, and males with a densely pigmented branchiostegal membrane.

Distribution

Monte Bello Islands, Western Australia, to Coral Bay, Northern Territory. Inhabits shallow sandy and silty-sand areas.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I,10; Anal fin I,11-12: Caudal fin, segmented rays 17, caudal branched rays 12-13; Pectoral fin 13-15; Pelvic fin I, 5; Gill rakers 2 + 1 + 6-7; Vertebrae 26; Lateral scale series 23-25; Tranverse scale series 7.
Breast with large cycloid scales, 3 in ventral midline.

Etymology

The species is named for Dr. D. F. Hoese, Australian Museum, Sydney, in recognition of his work on the systematics of Indo-Pacific gobies.
