More Info

Distribution

Shark Bay to North West Cape, Western Australia, and Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, to off Townsville, Queensland. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific: southern Thailand to the Solomon Islands, north to southern Japan and Taiwan, throughout the Coral Triangle and south to Australia.
Individuals or pairs are found on a range of coastal to outer reefs habitats with rich invertebrate growth. May prefer deeper cooler reefs.

Features

Dorsal fin IX, 28-30; Anal fin III, 19-21.

Feeding

Omnivore - feeds mostly on sponges, including tiny invertebrates found on the surface on sponges.

Similar Species

The similar Coradion calendula differs in the shape of the expanded pelvic fin (almost straight vs rounded and expanded posteriorly in C. chrysozonus), in the number of dorsal-fin soft rays (28-32 vs 27-30 in C. chrysozonus) and anal-fin soft rays (20-22 vs 18-21), and in the shape of the black band on the preopercle.
Adult C. calendula have an orange caudal-peduncle band with a small, saddle-like, blackish dorsal streak, vs. a broad, brown-to-black circum-peduncular band in C. chrysozonus. Juveniles have an orange or yellow caudal peduncle band (vs a blackish or brownish caudal-peduncle band in C. chrysozonus).

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin chryso- (= gold, gold-coloured) and zonus (= belt, girdle), in reference to the brownish-orange bands or bars on the sides.
