Summary:
A large greyish to dark brown conger eel with long pointed teeth, including strong fang-like teeth on the intermaxillary, black dorsal, anal and caudal fins, and relatively long dorsal and anal-fin rays.

NW of Geraldton to N of Exmouth, Western Australia), NE of Raine Island, Queensland, to off Babel Island, Tasmania. Elsewhere, the species is worldwide in all major oceans (except the Eastern Pacific), usually in deep water typically over soft sediment areas to a depth of 1318 m (mostly 900-1000 m). |

Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin vicinus (= near, neighbouring), possibly in reference to the presumed relationship of this species with Uroconger lepturus. |
