SE of Vulcan Shoal, Timor Sea (12°50´S) to north of Bathurst Island, Arafura Sea, NT (130°10´E) and Coral Sea off QLD (17°21´S - 17°41´S); tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific.


Dorsal fin 11; Anal fin 8-9; Pectoral fin 12-14; Gill rakers 16-19; Vertebrae 42-43.
Pectoral fin short, not reaching posteriorly to posterior end of dorsal fin base; pelvic fin very long, length 24.6-30.9% of SL.


The specific name brevirostris is from the Latin brevis (= short) and rostris (= snout), in reference to the short blunt snout of this species.
