Summary:
A pale pinkish to brownish-red seaperch with up to 7 darker bands along the side that are more distinct on the back, a white blotch on the gill cover, and large eyes close to the top of the head. The Halfbanded Seaperch is often seen perching on ledges and sponges.

Distribution

Off Peregian Beach, Queensland, to Lakes Entrance, and possibly west to Wilsons Promontory, Victoria, and eastern Tasmania to near Hobart. Inhabits sponge and soft coral communities on coastal and estuarine reefs in depths to 50 m. Halfbanded Seaperch are often seen perching on sponges and rocky outcrops.

Dorsal fin X, 21; Anal fin III, 8; Caudal fin 17; Pectoral fin 16–17; Pelvic fin I, 5; Lateral line scales ~46.  
Body depth 38–41% SL; head length 39–43% SL; eye diameter 20–23% HL; preopercles with 3 large forward directed spines below.
