Summary:
A cardinalfish with five poorly defined dark brown stripes (stripes with a fuzzy border) along the side, the rear end of the midlateral stripe ending in an almost pupil-sized black spot on the tail base, and pale red to pinkish fins.

Distribution

Hillarys, north to offshore reefs of north Western Australia, and Ashmore Reef and Cartier Islands in the Timor Sea, to the Great Barrier Reef, reefs in the Coral Sea, Queensland, south to Sydney Harbour, New South Wales; also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean, and possibly the Lord Howe Province in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific: eastern Africa and Madagascar east to the Line and Pitcairn islands, north to southwestern Japan and south to northern Australia and New Caledonia.
Individuals or small groups inhabit reef crests, reef slopes and deep drop-offs on clear seaward reefs. Shelters in holes and beneath ledges during the day.

Feeding

Feeds at night on small benthic invertebrates including polychaete worms.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin angustatus (= narrowed), possibly in reference to the narrower body stripes compared with those of Amia robusta (a junior synonym of Ostorhinchus cookii)
