Summary:
A common and widespread grouper in the Indo-west-central Pacific. Identified by the bright yellow margin on the lunate tail. Body of adults usually reddish with numerous small bluish to pinkish spots on the head, body and fins. Juveniles resemble goatfishes of the family Mullidae

Distribution |
Found in Australia from Shark Bay, Western Australia, to Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea and Cape York, Queensland to Sydney, New South Wales, Frederick Reef and Coringa-Herald Reserve in the Coral Sea, and at Middleton and Elizabeth Reefs and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species is widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa, to the Pitcairn Islands of eastern Oceania. |
