Summary:
A uniformly black snaggletooth with a black barbel bearing a white terminal bulb with several filaments. The gill cover lacks a large luminous patch, the AC photophores on the caudal peduncle are distinctly curved upward, and the IP and anterior of PV photophores form a straight line.

Coral Sea south-east of Osprey Reef , Queensland, Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west-central Pacific from South Africa eastwards to the Hawaiian Islands, north to Japan, and south to New Caledonia. |
Features |
Dorsal fin 11-14; Anal fin 18-20; Pectoral fin 8; Pelvic fin 7. Large luminous patch on operculum absent. Photophores: Photophores: IP 10, PV 16-17, VAV 19-21, AC 11-12, IC 56-59, OA 36-37. AC photopores forming a continuous, but distinctly arched line. IP and the anterior PV photophores forming a straight line. Maxillary teeth 20 to 21. Barbel with bulb bearing several filaments. |
